Castellani Winter Wine Tour ’13

The 13th of January will kick off the 2013 Winter Wine Tour (13-23 January), the traditional trip to the United States of America that Piergiorgio Castellani makes every year to present to the American public the new vintages of Castellani wines. We take this opportunity to remember the great success of the 2012 Summer Wine Tour which took place during the month of July on the west coast, when among the tastings and wine dinners, there was also an opportunity to relax with surfing some fun waves of the Pacific Ocean.

Combat in the vineyards

Mating disruption as a method to stop the action of an insect that is very damaging to grapes: the grape berry moth. Andrea Lucchi, entomologist, professor at the University of Pisa, studied for a long time the way to fight pests. For about ten years he has been experimenting with this method that is very efficient and "convenient" from the point of view of environmental protection. A method that closely touches us because we use it in our vineyards of Poggio al Casone since several years, with interesting results.

Harvest 2012 #1/2

It was not an easy year in Tuscany, as in many other terroirs of Italy. After the cold winter that threw us into a Siberian climate, it slammed on us the record heat of an extremely arid summer. Then with the first rains of September, the optimism came back because the vines (Sangiovese in particular) have shown great strength and our vineyards, cultivated with natural methods, have also coped well with water stress due to the ability to find in depth their own drinks. Of course, it was not all a bed of roses and, in quantitative terms, the follies of a crazy climate are being felt, first to mention the timing: in fact, we finished harvesting on September 25, almost two weeks earlier than usual! The racking are completed with excellent results. And there’s more to come...

Novello ’12

The monthly Italian magazine "Oggi Cucino" (today I cook) in the November issue gives a brief review of our Burchino’s Novello Toscana IGT in an article dedicated to this kind of young wines, available for sale from October 30. The label of this exceptional wine is drawn by the French painter Moss (definitely a singular artist, which you can read the story on our website) and was carried out in collaboration with the Sete Sois Sete Luas Festival.

From this September Castellani wines have become part of the wine list of two well-known Californian bars, The Bodega Wine Bar in Santa Monica and Pasadena. The owners Greg and Jason were able to create two fancy and mythical bars, whose philosophy is to give birth to a place to socialize and drink good wine and can be summed up in this sentence: "We like to drink wine. Not so much sniff it, stare at it, swirl it or try to describe it with funny words... but mostly just drink it." For us it’s a great satisfaction to have been chosen by them and especially to know that our wines are having a great success! In the picture Luca Forte, our Wine Marketing Consultant and his friend Massimo, after a day of surfing in Malibu, toast with Castellani wine eating tacos and grilled cheese at Bodega Wine Bar in Santa Monica.

Also this year the work done in the constant search for quality of our wines rewards us. The company, in fact, entered in the prestigious guide of L’Espresso, with the confirmation of two wines: the 2009 Chianti of Tenuta di Ceppaiano (15/20) and the legendary red Tuscan IGT 2010 "La Cattura" of Poggio al Casone organic vineyard (14/20).
